MSDS documents are commonly requested for raw materials and ingredients used during cosmetic formulation. They provide the formulator and manufacturer with important information about the material's hazards, handling requirements, storage conditions and physical and chemical properties.

An MSDS may therefore form part of the technical documentation collected for a cosmetic ingredient during product development.

MSDS vs. SDS

The term MSDS is still widely used in the cosmetics and chemical industries. However, the modern term is generally SDS (Safety Data Sheet).

SDSs follow a standardised format and are prepared according to the applicable chemical safety legislation. In the European Union, SDS requirements are established under the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and related legislation.

In practice, MSDS and SDS are often used to refer to the same type of safety document, although SDS is the current terminology.
