Peptides
Peptides are proteins whose main purpose is to form a protective film over the skin surface in order to reduce moisture loss. They are made from proteins and act as cell messengers which, in skin care, may stimulate healing and cell production. Claimed to boost collagen and reverse wrinkles, they have been difficult to formulate since they are broken down by natural enzymes before they can penetrate the skin. Some new synthetic peptides (such as hexapeptides, pentapeptides and polypeptides) do this more successfully and also carry cargo to the cells. It is hoped that ongoing technology will improve their regenerative and anti-ageing abilities, but currently they are used mostly for their water-binding properties.
